Adelaide: Man-of-match Gautam Gambhir feels that his team should have won the match earlier than scraping through in the final over.
"We should have finished the game in the 48th over. We shouldn't have taken this game to 50th over. This is my personal observation," said Gambhir, after his knock of 92 that set up India's four-wicket win against Australia.
Having said that, Gambhir did admit that it's "easier said than done." Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni's six in the last over sealed the deal.
"It's easier said than done. There is far more pressure on the players who are in the middle. It's their turn to take the decision. I don't know why he (Dhoni) delayed it. Perhaps, he wanted somebody else to take the responsibility. Still the most important shot in the match was played by him," Gambhir stated.
"If I was there, I wouldn't have looked to take it till the last over. I would have looked to finish one or two overs before. There is far more pressure even if you need 5-6 runs from the final over. But then we are different human beings, and we think differently."
There has been a lot of discussions on the decision by the team management to follow rotation policy and accordingly rest Sachin Tendulkar but the southpaw backed the decision.
"The amount of cricket we play, it's important to rotate. When we don't rotate, everyone has a problem. When we rotate, then it's an issue too. Be it Rohit or Raina, they get an extra opportunity. To be honest, this was the best XI too.
"More importantly, this is the XI that had the belief that they could beat any opposition in the park. One or two can't make the difference. It's the XI with belief. You don't want names. You want people who can deliver."
The Delhi lad said that it was important for one of the three top-order batsman to bat till the 35th over.
"Someone from the top-order had to bat till the 35th over. Fortunately, it was me. I thought Rohit played a fantastic knock even though he made only 33 runs. But he did so at a very critical stage of the game. I'm very confident that he would succeed and a big score is around the corner."
The three-figure mark might have eluded him but Gambhir says that as long as he is consistent, he is not bothered about landmarks.
"It's important to get consistent runs. If I am desperate for a century, it would go away. Any amount runs that helps the team win is good rather than make a hundred on a losing cause."
"For me, even Ravindra Jadeja's 12 runs were very crucial in team's win."
The television replays showed that Gambhir's leg before decision might have been a debatable one but he was in no mood to crib about it.
"It could have pitched outside the leg stump but with a naked eye, it's just flash of a second you get to take a decision. It could have gone either way. But it's better to finish with 92 than with a zero."
Gambhir termed Umesh Yadav as the find of the tour. "Umesh is the find of the tour. Somebody who can bowl at 150 kmph with a semi-new ball is fantastic. He should play long for India and be develop into a world class bowler. At that speed, it's tough for any great batsman. He is giving opponents back what we have been getting for years and years."
With the changed ICC rules made it mandatory for new balls being used from both ends, Gambhir feels that 270 was a good total.
"With two new balls, 270 was a good total. Two new balls also delay your game plan and the ball still remains new. The wicket was very similar throughout."
Gambhir dedicated this win and his knock to Yuvraj Singh who is recovering from a malignant tumour and presently getting treatment in the United States. |

Mumbai: West Indies added 15 runs to their overnight score of 575/9 before declaring their innings at 590 on day 3 of the third and final cricket Test against India here today.
Earlier on day 2, the visitors continued to grind the hapless Indian bowling attack on a batsman-friendly Wankhede Stadium track to take total control in the third and final Test here.
Darren Bravo, who slammed his third century in four Tests and second on the trot against India, and Kieran Powell put on 160 runs for the third wicket before the latter got dismissed and then the visitors went to tea at a formidable 494 for 4 in 157 overs.
Powell, who faced 149 balls in his 147-minute stay during his aggressive knock, was out for 81 when he edged left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha to rival captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni behind the stumps.
Bravo was unbeaten on 156, his second successive ton of the series and third in his last four games, after a stay of over six hours in which he faced 265 balls and hit 16 fours and giving him company at the other end was Marlon Samuels (18).
The visitors added 116 runs in 36 overs for the lone wicket of Powell in the second session after having lost Kirk Edwards in the pre-lunch period while adding 111 runs in 30 overs.
The post-lunch period saw the left-handed duo of Bravo and Powell having complete control over the listless Indian bowling attack for most of the two-hour session on a easy-paced track. The slowness of the track allowed Powell to lean back and punch the Indian bowlers through the off side for runs in boundaries.
Bravo, 105 at lunch, was the less adventurous partner in his association with Powell as he punched powerfully off the back foot to the covers against off spinners Virender Sehwag and R Ashwin, who operated in tandem in the first hour after the interval.
The 100 of the partnership came up in 91 minutes and 175 balls while Powell reached his 50 in 91 balls with 7 fours.
The first post-lunch hour produced 76 runs in 22 overs.
Sehwag was brought back into the attack and bowled in tandem with Ashwin who had a wicketless spell of none for 26 in 9 overs bowled on both sides of lunch.
Sehwag later gave way to Pragyan Ojha after bowling 16 overs without a wicket to his name. Even Sachin Tendulkar, bowling leg breaks, was used as the seventh bowler by Dhoni.
Powell was finally dismissed after a near five-hour stay 19 short of a century when he was caught behind off Ojha while trying to play a forcing shot to the off.
His innings of 81 was compiled in 147 minutes and he struck nine fours in his 149-ball stay.
His partnership with Bravo produced 160 runs in 279 balls, the third century stand for the visitors in the innings following 137 runs between openers Adrian Barath and Kraigg Brathwaite and 164 between Edwards and Bravo.
Edwards added 21 runs this morning to his overnight score before edging pacer Ishant Sharma to home team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni behind the stumps. His 86 off 165 balls contained 13 fours and he fell just before the end of the first hour. His innings of 81 was compiled in 147 minutes and he struck nine fours in his 149-ball stay.
R Ashwin has been India’s most successful bowler after claiming 4 wickets in the first inning till now. |

Chandigarh For quite some time, local tennis star Fatehdeep Singh had been waiting in the wings — ready to explode on the big scene and show the world where he belongs.
Fifteen-year-old Fatehdeep, who stands 5 feet 10 inches tall, has already taken a giant stride towards his goal — a dream which he has been harbouring ever since he took to the sport — he has been drafted into the Indian Junior Davis Cup team (under 16). “Nothing beats the feeling when you are on the court and people are screaming and cheering you. It will be a dream come true to represent the country again,” chuckled Fatehdeep, a student at DAV Model School in Sector 15.
Though he is not new to playing in front of both locaI and foreign faces — he had played against some of he best in the business in the IC Junior Challenge last year — the sheer pressure of playing for India and performing to his fullest capabilities in front of the prying eyes of selectors is something which he feels he will learn to tackle with more international tournaments in his kitty.
“All day long, you slug on the court looking to perfect your game. You miss family functions and the sweet moments with your friends because you want to make it big. You have to sacrifice spending time with your family, as you are constantly on the move playing tournaments. All your sacrifices should produce a result. That is all I am aiming for,” said Fatehdeep, who cites Adidas Nationals (Under-14) Tournament at Chennai last year 00 the title that he won — as the turning point of his life.
As one of the top-three ranked player in the Under-16 category, Fatehdeep, along with Shaik Abdullah and Garvit Batra, will form the Indian Davis Cup junior team. “Apart from routine workout and practice sessions, I regularly meditate to keep my mind fresh,” he said.
Before the Davis Cup at DLTA on April 18, Fatehdeep will attend a camp at National Tennis Academy on April 16. Though he will be busy in action in the ITF Juniors Grade IV Tennis Tournament in Indore, Fatehdeep said he will make sure he does not miss the cricket World Cup semi-final match between India and pakistan to be played at the PCA Stadium in Mohali. “I won’t be here at that time, but will catch the action on TV. I want India to win the World Cup,” said Fatehdeep, a big fan of Yuvraj Singh. |
