Indore: 80% women end domestic feud amicably

Indore: Nearly 80% married women in Indore, who complaint of harassment against in-laws, ended up amicably settling the disputes. Paradoxically, while the number of such complainants has grown significantly in the last couple of years, most of them resolved the marital discords without awaiting court verdict under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act 2005.

A study of domestic violence in Indore by child development project officer Anand Yadav analysed 350 such cases. He is doing a thesis on this subject.

The study pointed out that in most cases registered in the district financial relief was provided to the complainant but none of the victims exercised her right to live in the house of her in laws.

“The right to live in the in laws’ house, which is one of the important aspects of the act, has not been exercised by victims so far in the district,” women and child development officer Rajnish Sinha told DNA.

Out of the 855 cases registered so far in the district, only 91 reached the stage of verdict. In 81 cases interim relief in cash was provided to the victims while final verdict is still awaited.

“In 80% cases, the victims don’t wait for verdicts and resolve the matter ,” Anand Yadav told DNA.

Most of the victims are in the age group of 25 to 30 years and belong to middle and lower middle class.

Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act 2005 was implemented with an objective to giving protection to women from domestic violence. It also gives the complainant the right to stay in the household of her in laws in case of conflict.
