Nakhrali & Chokhi Dhani

Nakhrali & Chokhi Dhani

This is a new concept in entertainment which is fast catching roots in Indore. These are sort of heritage villages with rustic Rajasthani atmosphere. There are camel / horse / goat / bullock rides, train ride, puppet show, magic show, monkey show, bioscope, etc for the kids in addition to boating facility, rajasthani dance cum entertainment show, a public dance hall (disko!) etc. There is also a spacious indian style dining hall where hot, tasty meals are served. The whole area is nicely landscaped and kept clean and well maintained. Open full day on week ends and in the evening till night on working days. There are currently two such villages, Nakhrali Dhani at Rau in the souther suburb and Chokkhi Dhani on Khandwa road in the eastern suburb. These provide a very good means of family outing in the evenings.

Deoguradia

Deoguradia

Deoguradia IndoreIn a small picturesque village of Deoguradia, 8 kms from Indore, on Nemawar road, stands the monolithic rock temple built in 7th century and redone in 18th century by Ahilya Bai Holkar. Also known as Garuda Tirth, it has a water outlet in the shape of of Gomukh from which water flows out almost as in Abhishek. The original Shivalinga is 12 ft under water in a sunken temple above which the present temple is constructed. On every Shivratri, a fair is held in honour of the diety - Shri Gutkeshwar Mahadeo.

For the garments, Chhappan Bazar and Sarafa are places to visit. Chhappan Bazar has many shops selling mouthwatering "Chaat" and related stuff. Sarafa, which as the name suggests, is a jewelry market during day time. But at night, when the jewelry shops close, the place is magically transformed into a large indian fast food centre selling rabri, rasmalai, kulfi, and an amazing array of vegetarian snack foods and namkeens. This narrow mile long road (close to Rajwada) is packed with people through most of the night and has a carnival atmosphere.

Chattris of Indore
Indore ChattrisThe Chattris are the memorials to Holkar Rulers carved out of stone that have withstood the test of time to serve as one of the finest specimen of architectural style. These Chattris are important historical monuments, holding crucial status during the royal periods and making significant impact on the history books and texts. Consisting of dome type tombs with pyramidal spires on top, these Chattris were built in memory of Holkar rulers and are located in the banks of River Khan.

According to historical records, the Holkars ruled over a large area of the state of Madhya Pradesh. They were great rulers and enjoyed support of their people. During the year 1858, British dominated the country and India came under the rule of the Queen. The Holkars were defeated by the British in the war and had to submit their kingdom in their hands. As their capital was also lost, they shifted to Indore. The city derives its name from the famous temples named Indreshwar and Indrapur.

The incidents that lead to the birth of these Chattris are both intriguing and stuff of legends. The Holkar who were proud rulers and enjoyed a great support of the people were defeated by the British colonial army, forcing them to submit their kingdom and shifting to Indore. To serve as a reminder of their glorious rule, these Chattris were built, and true to its original purpose these chattris still exist reminding peoples about the bygone era. Some prominent monuments include the one dedicated to Maharani Krishnabai, the woman ruler of Malwa and two other dedicated to the father and son Tukoji Rao II and Shivaji Rao. There beautiful Chhatri dedicated to Bolia Sahib also exists within the complex.

A common prayer hall displaying carved arches and pillars connects these chattris together, and some life size statues of these rulers also exist atop a high platform. These Chattris are also known for the breathtaking sight presented during the nights, when they get illuminated. To enhance its beauty and visual impact, a manmade lake with fountains has been created and further beautified with well laid gardens on both banks and boating facilities.

Central Museum Indore
Central Museum in Indore is a hub for art lovers and history buffs alike. Preserving India’s rich history and cultural roots and displaying it through its rich collection of artifacts and souvenirs. One of the most interesting buildings in Indore, it is also known as the Indore Museum. The fascinating blend of history and civilization that flourished in this region during the pre historic age has left its traces, amongst other things, in the Parmar style and sculptures from Hinglajgarh.

Believed to have been originated here, the Parmar style with its chief features of proportioned figures, careful and intricate ornamentation and depiction in stone is extremely popular. Apart from these carvings, the museum also houses the finest specimen from medieval and pre-medieval Hindu and Jain sculptures. Collected after excavations in Hinglajgarh, these delicately carved stone sculptures belonging to the Gupta reigns belong to the 11th and 12th century. Some of the prominent depictions include standing Parvati and a damaged Chamunda, Harihara, Shiva and Parvati seated on Nandi. Although most of the architectural remains are in ruins, the one preserved in good condition consists of a doorframe richly adorned with ornamentation and figures.

The galleries totaling two in numbers have some of the rarest and pre-historic collections on display. Madhya Pradesh itself is a region boasting of a long and famous history that dates back to 5,000 - 4,000 BC and artifacts from that period are on display in Gallery I. quartz sickles, stone tools and ornaments from western Malwa are also on display. Gallery II houses famous Hindu mythological carvings, collection of coins as well as arms and ammunitions. An easily accessible location, the authorities with a view to promote these rare collections have kept the entry free as well as arranged for guides for the convenience of the visitors.
