Shani Temple

Ancient SHANI (Mandir) TEMPLE of Juni Indore, the pride of Indore, Madhya Pradesh is famous all over India & world. The speciality of this temple is, it is self established & it has not been established by any special person/authority. Here LORD SHANI himself has appeared.

This place is continuing from the time of royal Holkar Dynasty. Devi Ahilyabai herself used to come to worship here. According to the history book of temple, RAM TEMPLE situated here 750 years ago, which was established by Honourable Shivaji Rao Holkar I & numerous saints and deities worshipped here (Lord Ram with moustache is seen in very few places and Shani Mandir, Indore is one of them). 300 years ago Shri Pandit GulabChandji was the astrologer to the royal family, in spite of his blindness; he was renowned for his knowledge and predictions. The Royal family pleased with his services conferred with the seat of the temple to him.

Consequently, GulabChandji continued to worship & serve the people from here. After some few years Lord Shani himself appeared in Shri GulabChandji dream and revealed that his statue is in the well where he was bathing and washing clothes. Guruji, with the help of villagers, dug deep and found a two & half feet statue/idol of Lord Shani. He took out the idol immediately & established it in The Ram temple. Next day when GulabChandji went to pray and serve in his usual place in Shani temple, he was stunned to see the idol in front of him which he had established in Ram temple the previous day. He again gathered the local people and asked the people to establish the statue in Ram temple, but people were unable to shift the statue. So more people were called and with the help of elephants, they tried to shift the statue, but the statue did not move despite all the great effort.

Later it was decided to establish the idol in Shani temple itself. After that Guru Maharaj gave up his seat and gave it a form of a throne and built the temple in which Garbhgriha and carving of the dome was done. This it self is three centuries old. The vastu of this is Lakshmi oriented, north-facing and it exists till this day. With this, the ancient well from which Lord Shani appeared still exists, protected by the walls all around and doors are opened from time to time for people to offer their prayers/darshan.

Today the fourth generation is serving the temple and at present Shri Om Prakashji Tiwari is giving greater dimensions every year for last 45 years. According to traditional belief, Lord Shani is much pleased with music. So famous masters from India and abroad come to display and worship with their talents on the occasion of Shanishwar Jayanti every year.

Shani temple, Juni Indore is the only temple in India where classical music programmes are organised every year in which many renowned artists have come and performed.

Bada Ganpati

Bada Ganapati Temple is located at Indore, the former Holkar Dynasty ruled over the city for a long time. It had been the most prestigious and worthwhile visiting places of India, since the temple of Sri Ganesh is located there. Ganesh is considered as a God who is benevolent and most exquisite looking with the tusk of an elephant. In South India he is one of the most worshipped Gods.

History of Bada Ganapati:

It was built in the year 1875. According to the mythology, one of the residents of the city of Avantika or Ujjain dreamt of Lord Ganesh in his sleep. So, he rose up on the next day and prepared for the enormous statue of Lord Ganesha, so that the Lord blesses him. Bada in Hindi means large, so the temple is known as Bada Ganapati Temple, since it encloses the large statue of Lord Ganapati Bappa.

Description of Bada Ganapati:

The Bada Ganapati is a worthwhile site at Indore. It consists of a huge statue of Lord Ganesh, perhaps the largest in the world, which is approximately 25 feet tall and the color of the statue is Bright Orange.

According to Hindu beliefs, Lord Ganpati is regarded as the hinderer and protector from all obstacles. The shrine with its rich history and religious fervor is rendered the highest regard by the devotees who make a beeline to the shrine and offer their prayers. The shrine is located at the western end of M G Road in Indore.

The construction methodology used in the temple is rather unique and even weird at times. The complex is built by using limestone mix, jiggery, bricks and mud from elephants and horse stables. Later, the holy soil and water from the major pilgrim places were also brought and used on the temple. The chief image of deity made from precious metals generates a lot of attention from the devotees and overall its appearance is simply amazing. The beautiful frames of the idol are done completely in gold, silver, copper, brass.

Overall, the ingredients that went in to complete the construction makes for a rather interesting insight about the styles and methodology prevalent during those years. An interesting configuration of ingredients such as bricks, lime stone, masala made of Gud, methi dana etc. being case in point. However, some of the ingredients were used solely for the enhancement of purification and sacredness of the temple like the use of soil collected from seven moksha puris, the holy water from all major places of pilgrimage, mud from stables of horse, elephant and cow and the powder of Pancha-ratna (five gemstones).

With its deep religious roots, unique construction methodology and proximity with other famous tourist destinations of Indore, the site is a must visit for anyone visiting the region.

Annapurna Temple

Annapurna Temple in Indore is dedicated to Annapurna Devi, a Hindu Goddess of food and nourishment. The temple is one of the oldest temples of the city and a center for pilgrimage and tourism. Its architecture is different from the general North Indian temples. Located near Dashara Maidan grounds, it is inspired by the famous Meenakshi temple of Madurai.

Standing apart from other city temples, four life-size elephants hold on to the ornately decorated gate made of plaster. Apart from the main temple of Annapurna Devi, it houses several other deities in shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva, Kal Bhairav and Hanuman. The temple complex also has a hall for sermons and religious functions. The fourteen and half feet high idol of God Kashi Vishwanath in Padmasanath position is matchless and rare, not to be found anywhere else. The outer wall of the main temple is decorated with colourful reliefs from mythological stories. Dedicated to the goddess Annapurna the temple is one among the famous pilgrimage centers in Indore.

Not only devotees, but also tourists come to see this majestic shrine. As per Hindu mythology Annapurna Devi is said to be the goddess of food providing succor to all. Anna means cereal and Purna means complete and so the Goddess provides for all. An architectural splendor, the marvelous Annapurna Temple of Indore is worthy of a visit. Devout pilgrims make it a point to come and pay respect to the Goddess.
