Annapurna Temple

Annapurna Temple in Indore is dedicated to Annapurna Devi, a Hindu Goddess of food and nourishment. The temple is one of the oldest temples of the city and a center for pilgrimage and tourism. Its architecture is different from the general North Indian temples. Located near Dashara Maidan grounds, it is inspired by the famous Meenakshi temple of Madurai.

Standing apart from other city temples, four life-size elephants hold on to the ornately decorated gate made of plaster. Apart from the main temple of Annapurna Devi, it houses several other deities in shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva, Kal Bhairav and Hanuman. The temple complex also has a hall for sermons and religious functions. The fourteen and half feet high idol of God Kashi Vishwanath in Padmasanath position is matchless and rare, not to be found anywhere else. The outer wall of the main temple is decorated with colourful reliefs from mythological stories. Dedicated to the goddess Annapurna the temple is one among the famous pilgrimage centers in Indore.

Not only devotees, but also tourists come to see this majestic shrine. As per Hindu mythology Annapurna Devi is said to be the goddess of food providing succor to all. Anna means cereal and Purna means complete and so the Goddess provides for all. An architectural splendor, the marvelous Annapurna Temple of Indore is worthy of a visit. Devout pilgrims make it a point to come and pay respect to the Goddess.
