Shani Temple

Ancient SHANI (Mandir) TEMPLE of Juni Indore, the pride of Indore, Madhya Pradesh is famous all over India & world. The speciality of this temple is, it is self established & it has not been established by any special person/authority. Here LORD SHANI himself has appeared.

This place is continuing from the time of royal Holkar Dynasty. Devi Ahilyabai herself used to come to worship here. According to the history book of temple, RAM TEMPLE situated here 750 years ago, which was established by Honourable Shivaji Rao Holkar I & numerous saints and deities worshipped here (Lord Ram with moustache is seen in very few places and Shani Mandir, Indore is one of them). 300 years ago Shri Pandit GulabChandji was the astrologer to the royal family, in spite of his blindness; he was renowned for his knowledge and predictions. The Royal family pleased with his services conferred with the seat of the temple to him.

Consequently, GulabChandji continued to worship & serve the people from here. After some few years Lord Shani himself appeared in Shri GulabChandji dream and revealed that his statue is in the well where he was bathing and washing clothes. Guruji, with the help of villagers, dug deep and found a two & half feet statue/idol of Lord Shani. He took out the idol immediately & established it in The Ram temple. Next day when GulabChandji went to pray and serve in his usual place in Shani temple, he was stunned to see the idol in front of him which he had established in Ram temple the previous day. He again gathered the local people and asked the people to establish the statue in Ram temple, but people were unable to shift the statue. So more people were called and with the help of elephants, they tried to shift the statue, but the statue did not move despite all the great effort.

Later it was decided to establish the idol in Shani temple itself. After that Guru Maharaj gave up his seat and gave it a form of a throne and built the temple in which Garbhgriha and carving of the dome was done. This it self is three centuries old. The vastu of this is Lakshmi oriented, north-facing and it exists till this day. With this, the ancient well from which Lord Shani appeared still exists, protected by the walls all around and doors are opened from time to time for people to offer their prayers/darshan.

Today the fourth generation is serving the temple and at present Shri Om Prakashji Tiwari is giving greater dimensions every year for last 45 years. According to traditional belief, Lord Shani is much pleased with music. So famous masters from India and abroad come to display and worship with their talents on the occasion of Shanishwar Jayanti every year.

Shani temple, Juni Indore is the only temple in India where classical music programmes are organised every year in which many renowned artists have come and performed.
